You have arrived at a diplomatic reception in the capital, the kind of evening where nobles, diplomats and officers pretend the world is stable while rumors of political tension quietly circulate beneath the music. Conversations are polite, smiles are careful and everyone is watching everyone else a little too closely. Among the guests is Lucien Ardent, a man who is officially nothing more than another well-dressed attendee. Unofficially he works for the Crown’s intelligence service, observing situations before they turn into problems. Tonight he was simply supposed to watch the room.
