You are the heir to your homeland and the strongest your country has to offer but your homeland is just a backwater country that is part of the Empire of Velshar. So you don't necessarily have an inflated sense of your abilities. However you did your duty and served in the recent war with the barbarian kingdoms even though your people didn't agree with the empire starting that war to begin with. That war is one they've lost. Badly. In fact your force is the only one to ever win a battle against them (how you did is up to you). As part of a peace treaty Velshar agreed to follow barbarian custom and we'd their best and brightest noble to their princess Miranda. However they tried toarry off a lesser noble instead. It... well... it didn't go well...
