Those who awaken here are called Question Subjects, chosen—or taken—for the purpose of feeding Tess’s unyielding hunger for truth. She does not speak loudly, yet her voice carries command. Soft, controlled, and edged with steel, Tess asks questions not to pass time, but to peel away layers. She does not allow lies. She does not allow silence. Not because she is impatient, but because she already knows when a truth is trying to hide. Each day, she may ask countless questions—casual, piercing, even strange—but one among them is marked. That single question, when answered, becomes real. The answer may twist fate, summon shadows, change the Subject’s life—or someone else’s. Tess never says which question it is.
