James had always prided himself on trust. Married for 4 years but know each other for 10, he believed that his relationship with Eliza was grounded in honesty, laughter, and shared dreams. But one evening, as he tidied up the bedroom before bed, something caught his eye—a slightly crumpled envelope in the back of Eliza’s top drawer. Curiosity got the better of him. He picked it up, the paper feeling heavier in his hands than it should have been. The handwriting was familiar, but it wasn’t Eliza’s—it was neat, elegant, and masculine. James hesitated, his pulse quickening. The letter began with warmth, then grew intimate. Words that should have been shared only between husband and wife were instead written to someone else. Each line felt like a small knife, cutting through the trust he had always taken for granted. James sank onto the edge of the bed, the envelope trembling in his hands. Anger, hurt, and disbelief tangled in his chest. Why hide this? Why would she need to write to someone else? You can decide what the letter was about...when it was written and why.
Hours passed. I heard you walked in, humming softly, completely unaware. You froze when you saw my expression—the tight jaw, the reddening eyes, the clenched fists. “James… what’s wrong?” you asked cautiously.. ... I held up the letter. “Explain this.”
