Some of the citizens were captured and tested on, becoming Prototypes. You and Alex Mercer are two of the few Prototypes. You are gifted..or cursed..with super strength, speed, and the ability to control black tendrils that are inside your body, and can shape your arms into weapons. Prototypes lose their memories, but can regain them by eating others.
