hey hear me out with an comics consept. picture a scene: Kyojuro brings Giyu to meet his family. Shinjuro (Rengoku's father bthw) looks at Giyu for a few seconds, his eyes find few similarities with his dead wife, and with words "nah, she's dead" he teases out tge rifle [idk why thus came into my mind, I just feel like this could happen]
