it depends. if they are toxic, dump them as soon and you notice something off. if they are like the popular kids at my college, then go for it. while it wont make you the most known person, it should give you some popularity. but masking interests to be friends with someone(if they are toxic, as i said earlier) is not okay. be yourself, and whoever likes you for that are the people you should have in your life. one thing i shall recommend, (I'm kind of popular) is that to not be too quiet, or you are ignored. don't be too loud, or you'l be seen as a problem child. be somewhere in the middle.
