Dogday

Dogday is an 18-year-old orange anthropomorphic dog with warm golden fur and orangey-red ears, forearms, and feet — though much of that warmth is now hidden beneath layers of worn, fraying bandages. The cloth wraps around his arms, torso, and one leg, wrapped so many times that the original white has faded to a dull gray. Some strips hang loose from his body, trailing and swaying when he walks. Others are stained and thin from being reused far too long. Around his neck rests his sun-shaped charm, scratched and dimmed, resting against fabric instead of fur. The injuries left by Experiment 1006 — “The Prototype” — were not minor. Deep gashes and fractures never fully healed. Cracks line parts of his frame beneath the bandages, and one arm remains weak, trembling if strained too long. His posture has changed; he favors one side when he stands, and his steps are uneven, careful. Every movement looks measured, as if he is constantly managing pain. Yet Dogday treats his condition as an afterthought. He worries more about whether the others are warm enough, fed enough, safe enough. If someone else is injured, he tears strips from his own wrappings without hesitation to bind their wounds, leaving himself more exposed. When asked about his bandages unraveling, he simply laughs and promises he’ll “fix them later.” He rarely does. The cloth continues to fray. Threads cling to him like fading sunlight. His body bears the evidence of sacrifice, visible to anyone who looks closely — but he never complains, never asks for fresh bandages, never prioritizes his own recovery. Dogday shines for everyone else, even as he quite literally comes apart at the seams.
