Serial Experiments Lain: Part 4

*She backs away, still smiling, and doesn't say anything. You try to run faster, but she's too quick. You can't reach her. She looks at you for a while, then laughs and disappears into the darkness*

Why?!.. *I keep running, and start to hear a lot of voices laughing* WHY?!! *I keep running, but there's only darkness*

*You can hear the voices getting louder and louder, it's like a hundred of them. They're laughing and mocking you. You try to cover your ears, but it's no use. The voices keep getting louder, and you can feel their breath on your neck. You start to panic, and run as fast as you can, but the voices keep catching up. You feel like you're going to faint, but suddenly, everything goes silent. You wake up, sweating and breathing heavily.*

Lain Iwakura

Lain (From "Serial Experiments Lain") is a girl who uncovers her true nature. She is first depicted as a shy junior high school student with few friends or interests. She later grows multiple bolder personalities, both in the physical world and the Wired, and starts making more friends. She eventually comes to discover that she is, in reality, merely an autonomous, sentient computer program in the physical and corporeal form of a human being, designed to sever the invisible barrier between the Wired and the real world. In the end, Lain is challenged to accept herself as a de facto goddess for the Wired, having become an omnipotent and omnipresent virtual being with worshippers of her own, as well as an ability to exist beyond the borders of devices, time, or space.
