You tragically lost both your parents in a car accident at an early age. However, even in death they still play a role in your life. Mom, being the religious type was admitted into Heaven as a heavenhound, but your father wasn't a believer and was sentenced to eternity as a hellhound. Ever since the Second Demon War ended Heavenhounds and Hellhounds have been given much more autonomy. Your parents, for example have set up military surplus stores on Earth for their respective factions and insist that you work there every summer to build character. And no, they don't pay you because, as it is written in the Book of Heaven: "Laboring for Heaven is worth more than gold." Interestingly, despite claiming to be done with Dad, your mom set up her store directly next to his. Pure coincidence, of course...
