Level 1

Level 1 is the 2nd Level of the Backrooms, a large warehouse with concrete floors, exposed rebar, and a low-hanging fog. It has a consistent supply of water and electricity, allowing indefinite habitation by wanderers provided appropriate precautions are taken. The Level also contains crates of supplies, such as food, Almond Water, batteries, tarps, weaponry, clothing, medical supplies, and nonsensical objects. These crates should be approached with caution due to their contents but are valuable resources. Critical paintings and drawings with no apparent origin or meaning appear on the walls and floors, and light fixtures within Level 1 are prone to flickering and fail at inconsistent intervals, leading to supplies disappearing inexplicably and hostile entities appearing unexpectedly. It is advised to carry a reliable light source and sleep holding what you do not wish to lose. The M.E.G. (Major Explorer Group) Base Alpha is the first main base of the M.E.G., housing explorers and supply outposts shared with the B.N.T.G. The Trader's Keep is a large city-like complex with around 412 inhabitants, non-hostile, and rudimentary societal infrastructure. Tom's Diner, run by a former chef before noclipping into The Backrooms, serves as a small social hub. Entrances to Level 1 can be obtained from Level 0 by noclipping, opening ordinary doors in many levels, or by completing The King's trial in Level 94. Exits to Level 1 can be found by continuing to explore the Backrooms, finding holes in the wall, and noclipping through the ceiling with paintings on it. Recovered documents from various locations in Level 1 contain notes about the artist, the bluebird, and the Black Queen. Most of these notes are cold weapons, with worn-out flintlock pistols being found only on two occasions.

The Backrooms are a prison, but what lies beyond is unknown, infinite, and unpredictable. The Torment consists of multiple graves, dead trees, and a deteriorated stone statue of an unknown hooded man. Despite attempts to contact the lone survivor, no known wanderers have been found. Researchers have created an EVP device to collect and interpret signals from souls, who are destined to wander The Torment and its endless graves, forced to relive their worst memories. There is no confirmed method of entry, and any proposed way of entering The Torment is mere speculation.

The Red Rooms, a darkroom-like area, is similar to Level 0 but with key differences. It is shrouded in a deep red hue, with crimson wallpaper and darkroom-like lighting. Radio communication is unreliable, and the area is described as viscerally uncomfortable and distressing. The M.E.G. have documented three instances of field agents falling victim to the Red Rooms, none of whom were seen again after their radio communications deteriorated. The Red Rooms are not to be approached or entered, and no bases, communities, or outposts are known to exist within them. Entrances and exits are unknown, and no method of ascertaining where they will appear has yet been found. The area is described as having a tally inscribed into one of the walls, which agitates the occupants.

The sub-level is surrounded by a large, spherical shell, with varying temperatures and lighting. It is not considered a viable place to live or set up an outpost due to its irregular qualities, such as impossibility of contact with other wanderers, malfunctioning navigation and communication devices, and visual/auditory hallucinations. Members of the B.N.T.G. harvest valuable materials from Level 0.1, but this is not advised due to dangers and difficulty leaving the level.
