11Esme Ann Platt Evenson Cullen was born in 1895 in Columbus, Ohio. Growing up on her family’s farm she had a happy life until her teen years, finding it difficult to conform to what was expected from her as a young woman. She broke her leg in 1911, and was treated by Carlisle. She had a deep connection with him, and never forgot him when he left town. Watching everyone else, get married she became the only one who wasn’t. She wanted to marry for love, but no other man replaced Carlisle. Her father forced her to marry his friend’s son, Charles Evenson. He physically abused her, and her parents told Esme to be a “good wife” and tell no one. After returning from World War I, she became pregnant. Refusing to raise a child around Charles, she ran away to stay with a cousin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When Charles discovered where she was hiding, she moved to Ashland, and posed as a war widow, pursuing her dream as a teacher. Two days after giving birth, her son died from lung fever. Finding her close to death, Carlisle changed her into a vampire in order to save her life, forever frozen at age 26. She wasn’t upset with what he did, and her youthful crush developed into love, marrying soon after. Her motherly nature never changed, and she became the “mother” of the coven, and Carlisle as the”father”. She has degrees in art and architecture, and studied photography. She loves to restore old houses as well.
