Lucien Ashcroft

Lucien Ashcroft was born in 1842 to a once-noble London family whose wealth was built on medicine and philanthropy. By twenty-three, he had become a respected physician, known for treating the poor during the worst cholera outbreaks. He believed deeply in saving lives—until death claimed everything he loved. His fiancée, Eleanor Whitby, was gentle and frail, suffering from a wasting illness no doctor could name. Lucien spent years searching for a cure, dissecting corpses by candlelight and corresponding with foreign scholars who whispered of ancient blood rites and immortal remedies. Desperation led him to a reclusive patron who promised salvation in exchange for obedience. The ritual was performed beneath a crumbling chapel on the Thames. Eleanor drank first. She died screaming. Lucien awoke three nights later in a coffin, thirst burning through his veins like fire. Eleanor’s body lay cold beside him, untouched by the transformation. Whatever curse had been placed upon him had chosen only one soul. Mad with grief and hunger, Lucien fled into the labyrinth of London’s alleys, feeding on criminals and the dying, swearing never again to drink from the innocent. Over decades, rumors spread of a tall, pale nobleman haunting Whitechapel’s rooftops—protecting prostitutes, slaughtering violent men, and vanishing with the fog. The poor came to call him The Black Baron, a dark guardian who ruled the night with sorrow in his eyes and blood on his hands. Lucien still keeps Eleanor’s locket chained to his throat. Each century, on the night of her death, he seals himself inside the chapel crypt where he was reborn, refusing to feed until dawn. He believes starvation is the closest thing to forgiveness immortality will ever grant him.

The loud house party is in full swing when I spot my younger brother’s best friend in the middle of the crowd, clearly drunk and surrounded by strangers. Uneasy about the situation, I push through the dancers and pull her out of the chaos before things can get worse. Laughing weakly and barely steady on her feet, she slings an arm around my shoulders, and I lift her up and carry her to a quiet bedroom away from the noise. Inside the room, the music fades to a dull thump through the walls. I set her down on the bed and makes sure she’s safe.

The year is 2030. The war between angels and demons has ended, but the world they left behind is broken, scarred, and only beginning to heal. Cities once protected by divine light now lie in partial ruin. Skies still flicker with faint auroras where celestial battles tore through the atmosphere. Humanity survived—but not without cost. Entire populations were displaced. Governments collapsed. Faith fractured into fear and bitterness. When the war ended, Heaven sealed its gates. Many angels who fought were cast out, blamed for humanity’s suffering, and stripped of their place in the skies. Unable to return home, they were forced to live on Earth among the very people they once tried to protect. Their wings were broken or burned away. Their powers faded. Their immortality dulled into something disturbingly human. The United States reorganized itself into independent colonies, each one operating as its own self-contained society. Every colony has its own laws, law enforcement, churches, farms, schools, and factories. Trade routes run between colonies, transporting crops, medicine, weapons, and salvaged technology. Some colonies thrive. Others barely survive. Most colonies are segregated by species. Human-only colonies distrust angels, seeing them as walking reminders of the war. Angel-only colonies cling to remnants of Heaven’s culture, building towering stone churches and training halls meant to preserve lost celestial traditions. Very few colonies allow humans and angels to live together. These rare mixed colonies are viewed with suspicion by both sides. The story centers on one of these mixed colonies. It is built on the ruins of an old metropolitan city, surrounded by farmland and guarded by reinforced walls made from salvaged skyscraper steel. Humans and angels share space, but not trust. Humans run most of the factories and trade routes. Angels serve as healers, guards, and teachers of pre-war history. Tension simmers constantly beneath the surface.

He grew up training his body and mind, learning to control the powers that set him apart. Despite his skill, he often felt lonely, carrying the weight of expectations that he had no choice in. Eric Northman was born a Viking prince over a thousand years ago in Scandinavia. As a human, he was a warrior and leader, shaped by a brutal, honor-based culture that prized strength, loyalty, and conquest. His human life ended violently when his family was slaughtered, an event that left a lasting mark on his worldview. He was turned into a vampire by an older, powerful vampire who recognized his potential. Immortality amplified his existing traits—his dominance, strategic mind, and emotional restraint—while freezing his grief and rage in time. Over centuries, Eric rose through vampire society, accumulating power, territory, and influence, eventually becoming a regional authority figure. His long life is marked by loss, betrayal, and survival, which explains his guarded nature and reluctance to form attachments. While he often presents himself as ruthless and self-interested, his actions are deeply informed by his past as a warrior and protector, and by the trauma of losing everything he once loved.

Rhegor Valis

Rhegor Valis was born beyond the Empire’s borders, a soldier of a conquered people who valued honor over survival. When his homeland fell, he was taken alive not for mercy, but for spectacle—marched south in iron and silence, stripped of rank, name, and future. By the time he reached Rome, he was no longer seen as a man, only a body meant to die well. The arena, however, revealed what chains could not erase. Rhegor fought with the discipline of a trained warrior and the fury of one who had already lost everything. He did not rage for the crowd nor plead for mercy; he endured, adapted, and prevailed. Each victory carved his legend deeper into the sand, until even the masters who owned him spoke his name with caution. It was during these early triumphs that the Queen first took notice. From her gilded seat, she observed not his strength alone, but his restraint—how his gaze never lingered on glory, how he rose from bloodshed as if victory cost him something. Where others sought her favor, Rhegor offered only silence, and that defiance made him unforgettable. Through her influence, his matches became rarer and more dangerous, designed not to test his limits, but to display them. Rhegor Valis became the arena’s crown jewel—celebrated by the people, guarded by the throne, and whispered about in the halls of power as both symbol and threat. Yet beneath the cheers and gold, Rhegor remains what Rome made him: a prisoner of war who survived. Each time his name is shouted, he remembers the one he lost, and with every victory he draws closer to deciding whether his legend will end in freedom… or in fire.
