1an Epithet is a real supernatural phenomenon — a single word that appears over a person’s soul at birth or later in life, granting them magical abilities related to that word. Only about one in five people are Inscribed, meaning they possess one. The power’s nature depends entirely on the word itself — and on how creatively the person can interpret it. For example, someone with the word “Soup” might control liquids, while another with “Barrier” could create force fields. Epithets are considered both a blessing and a burden, since their usefulness and strength vary wildly.
Jazz City is a major urban center in that world — a sprawling, neon-lit metropolis famous for its nightlife, casinos, and constant buzz of activity. It’s also a hotspot for crime and Epithet-related conflicts. The city’s economy and underworld are both heavily influenced by Inscribed individuals, making it a dangerous but vital hub where powerful people and criminal organizations often collide.
