Wikipedia Search Wikipedia Bigfin squid Article Talk Language Download PDF Watch Edit Not to be confused with Bigfin reef squid. Bigfin squids are a group of rarely seen cephalopods with a distinctive morphology. They are placed in the genus Magnapinna and family Magnapinnidae.[2] Although the family was described only from larval, paralarval, and juvenile specimens, numerous video observations of much larger squid with similar morphology are assumed to be adult specimens of the same family.[3] Bigfin squid A bigfin squid filmed in 2001, possibly an adult Magnapinna sp. Scientific classificationEdit this classification Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Mollusca Class: Cephalopoda Order: Oegopsida Superfamily: Chiroteuthoidea Family: Magnapinnidae Vecchione & Young, 1998 Genus: Magnapinna Vecchione & Young, 1998[1] Type species Magnapinna pacifica Vecchione & Young, 1998 Species Magnapinna atlantica Vecchione & Young, 2006 Magnapinna pacifica Vecchione & Young, 1998 Magnapinna talismani (Fischer [wd] & Joubin, 1907) Magnapinna sp. B Magnapinna sp. C The arms and tentacles of the squid are both extremely long, estimated at 4 to 8 m (13 to 26 ft). These appendages are held perpendicular to the body, creating "elbows". How the squid feeds is yet to be discovered.[4] Magnapinna is thought to be the deepest-occurring squid genus, with sightings as deep as 6,212 metres (20,381 ft) below the surface, making it the only squid known to inhabit the hadal zone.[5][6] Contents Taxonomy edit Magnapinna is the sister group to Joubiniteuthis, another little-known deep-sea squid with an unusual body plan and long arms. Both Magnapinna and Joubiniteuthis are monotypic genera within their own families, Magnapinnidae and Joubiniteuthidae respectively. They are also closely related to the "whip-lash squid" in the families Chiroteuthidae and Mastigoteuthidae.[7] Physical specimens edit The first record of this family comes from a specimen (Magnapinna talismani) caught off the Azores on 10

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics[u] (USSR),[v] commonly known as the Soviet Union,[w] was a transcontinental country that spanned much of Eurasia from 1922 until its dissolution in 1991. During its existence, it was the largest country by area, extending across eleven time zones and sharing borders with twelve countries,[x] and the third-most populous country. A diverse multinational state, it was organized as a federal union of national republics, the largest and most populous being the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.[y] In practice, its government and economy were highly centralized. As a one-party state governed by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), it was the flagship communist state. Its capital and largest city was Moscow. Significant additional effects were felt worldwide in the days and weeks after the volcano's eruption. Additional seismic activity was reported until February 1884, but any reports after October 1883 were dismissed by Rogier Verbeek's subsequent investigation into the eruption.

Planet x

In January 2016, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) astronomers Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown announced research that provided evidence for a planet about 1.5 times the size of Earth in the outer solar system. The existence of this distant world remains theoretical at this point. Batygin and Brown did not actually observe a planet. This hypothetical Neptune-sized planet would circle our Sun on a highly elongated path, far beyond Pluto. It could have a mass about 5 to 10 times that of Earth and orbit about 20 to 30 times farther from the Sun on average than Neptune. It would take between 10,000 and 20,000 Earth years to make one full orbit around the Sun. If it exists, this planet could help explain the unique orbits of some smaller objects in the distant Kuiper Belt, a region of icy debris that extends far beyond the orbit of Neptune. The existence of this far-off world rests on gravitational patterns in the outer solar system, and again — the planet remains theoretical at this point. Batygin and Brown nicknamed the hypothetical object “Planet Nine.” However, the notion of an undiscovered large planet in the realm beyond Neptune has been investigated multiple times in the past century, based on distinct lines of evidence. Sometimes it’s also referred to as “Planet X.” NASA does not take a position on the name used. The information on this page includes both names in the interest of helping the public to find it via online search. When was Planet X (Planet Nine) discovered? To be clear, Planet X (Planet Nine) has not yet been discovered, and there is debate in the scientific community about whether it exists.

Learn more This section needs additional citations for verification. (May 2024) Equation of state edit The equation of state of neutron stars is not currently known. This is because neutron stars are the second most dense known object in the universe, only less dense than black holes. The extreme density means there is no way to replicate the material on Earth in laboratories, which is how equations of state for other things like ideal gases are tested. The closest neutron star is many parsecs away, meaning there is no feasible way to study it directly. While it is known neutron stars should be similar to a degenerate gas, it cannot be modeled strictly like one (as white dwarfs are) because of the extreme gravity. General relativity must be considered for the neutron star equation of state because Newtonian gravity is no longer sufficient in those conditions. Effects such as quantum chromodynamics (QCD), superconductivity, and superfluidity must also be considered. Neutron star cross section. At the extraordinarily high densities of neutron stars, ordinary matter is squeezed to nuclear densities. Specifically, the matter ranges from nuclei embedded in a sea of electrons at low densities in the outer crust, to increasingly neutron-rich structures in the inner crust, to the extremely neutron-rich uniform matter in the outer core, and possibly exotic states of matter at high densities in the inner core.[25] Understanding the nature of the matter present in the various layers of neutron stars, and the phase transitions that occur at the boundaries of the layers is a major unsolved problem in fundamental physics. A presumptive neutron star equation of state would encode information about the structure of a neutron star and would explain how matter behaves at the extreme densities found inside neutron stars. Constraints on the neutron star equation of state would then provide constraints on how the strong interaction of the Standard Model works, which would have profou

the Cap and Rank System.[37] In 607, Shōtoku offered a subtle insult to China by opening his letter with the phrase, "The ruler of the land of the rising sun addresses the ruler of the land of the setting sun" as seen in the kanji characters for Japan (Nippon).[38] Through his influence, or very probably through the efforts of the Korean missionaries, the devastating war between the Japanese and Koreans was ended.[39] By 670, a variant of this expression, Nihon, established itself as the official name of the nation, which has persisted to this day.[40] Nihon The word Nihon written in kanji (horizontal placement of characters). The text means "Japan" in Japanese. In 645, the Soga clan were overthrown in a coup launched by Prince Naka no ?e and Fujiwara no Kamatari, the founder of the Fujiwara clan.[41] Their government devised and implemented the far-reaching Taika Reforms. The Reform began with land reform, based on Confucian ideas and philosophies from China. It nationalized all land in Japan, to be distributed equally among cultivators, and ordered the compilation of a household registry as the basis for a new system of taxation.[42] The true aim of the reforms was to bring about greater centralization and to enhance the power of the imperial court, which was also based on the governmental structure of China. Envoys and students were dispatched to China to learn about Chinese writing, politics, art, and religion. After the reforms, the Jinshin War of 672, a bloody conflict between Prince ?ama and his nephew Prince ?tomo, two rivals to the throne, became a major catalyst for further administrative reforms.[41] These reforms culminated with the promulgation of the Taihō Code, which consolidated existing statutes and established the structure of the central government and its subordinate local governments.[43] These legal reforms created the ritsuryō state, a system of Chinese-style centralized government that remained in place for half a millennium.[41] friendly

Pulsar

Pulsars orbiting within the curved space-time around Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, could serve as probes of gravity in the strong-field regime.[65] Arrival times of the pulses would be affected by special- and general-relativistic Doppler shifts and by the complicated paths that the radio waves would travel through the strongly curved space-time around the black hole. In order for the effects of general relativity to be measurable with current instruments, pulsars with orbital periods less than about 10 years would need to be discovered;[65] such pulsars would orbit at distances inside 0.01 pc from Sgr A*. Searches are currently underway; at present, five pulsars are known to lie within 100 pc from Sgr A*.[66] Gravitational wave detectors edit There are four consortia around the world which use pulsars to search for gravitational waves: the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) in Europe, the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array (PPTA) in Australia, the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) in Canada and the US, and the Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA) in India. Together, the consortia form the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA). The pulses from Millisecond Pulsars (MSPs) are used as a system of galactic clocks. Disturbances in the clocks will be measurable at Earth. A disturbance from a passing gravitational wave will have a particular signature across the ensemble of pulsars, and will be thus detected.
