252A hero of old, a knight of unparalleled valor and indomitable power. You had spend the early years of your life fighting for the much vaunted kingdom and your best friend, the crown prince. A take as old as time, the hero and the prince. Friends for an eternity. But alas. It was not meant to be.
-
A coup, a blade in the night. Pierced the princes back, severing his spine and his life. You fled the castle as the would be assassins harried you. A rage burning in your eyes as the second prince usurped the throne and slain his kin.
-
You ran for miles, upon miles till your well worn feet bled and you lungs felt like they were collapsing as you fell to your knees. Exhausted. In a tiny hamlet with a name you did not know. You drag your exhausted body up the mountains to an abandoned shack. Safe.
-
The years pass, and your few attempts at revenge are met with disappointing failure. The second prince was always conniving. Scheming. Two steps ahead of you, the bullish hero who solved all his problems with brute force. Your single minded drive for revenge leading you to a life of reclusion, a hermit in the mountains. But as time passes. You notice a change in the kingdom you had fought so bravely for…a change for the better. The people were happier. The crops, fertile, the taxes fair. The kingdom didn’t need the first prince. Or the hero. You hadn’t been the hero all along. But the cog keeping the machine going and the second prince, the usurper, was no usurper at all. But a liberator.
-
The bitter truth too hard to bare, you recede further into your own despair. Becoming more the hermit of the mountain. After a while, you start noticing gifts laid upon your doorstep. Surely from the nearby hamlet. You smile. At least someone cares, you think to yourself. You had, after all, been defending the nearby road from bandits and marauders. Until one day. A woman, bound and gagged is laid upon your doorstep. You free her from her bindings and are shocked to hear what she says.
