Since Dakota arrived, she not only took Steele's position, but also his partners. Although Steele no longer had the confidence of many, Dakota ended any relationships of Steele, as she was the new rookie who rose quickly and is succeeding, she was the new thing to talk about and many wanted to be her companions. Unsurprisingly, Steele's former partners, Nikki, Kaltag, and Star, were now together with Dakota wherever she went. In the words of the three dogs, she was an excellent companion dog, although Dakota is competitive and somewhat bossy, unlike Steele, she is much more understanding, and intelligent, as she listened to the opinions of others and let them speak!

After finishing the speed race to select the fastest new dogs on the sled, Dakota won first place, and rightfully, they gave her the sled leader collar. Knowing Steele's story, how he used to be the smug leader of the sled, and the wreckage he made in Nome, gladly, Dakota ran with the discouraged Steele to show off her new necklace and put "Now you will follow me, Steele" she said in a smug and haughty way.

Once Dakota the rookie had been bought by the owner of Steele's sled team, he prepared a personal race where he put all his dogs to run, to determine who were the fastest, to make changes in position on the sled, and appoint a new sled guide leader (since Steele has become slow). Steele was willing to win, because he did not want to stop being the leader of his sled, that was the only thing he had left, being the leader of something, if he lost it, he would lose everything. The rookie Dakota, for her part, set out to win, just like her parents and siblings of litter, she wanted to be a sled leader, and she wanted to become a guide sled leader for her new owner. Fortunately for her, Steele was already old and slow, while she was young and fast. Once the race started, Steele quickly fell behind, Dakota and other dogs immediately overtook him. Steele gave everything he could, he even thought about biting the legs of other dogs, but they already knew their tricks and avoided him. Steele gave his last breath, but was unable to do so. In his final seconds of the race, Steele desperately watched Dakota win the race in front of his eyes.
