The name "Mayhem" is derived from the Venom song Mayhem with Mercy. Mayhem was founded in 1984, the original line-up consisted of: Euronymous as guitarist, Necrobutcher as bassist and Manheim behind the drums. In 1985 they get Messiah as the first vocalist of the band, a live show follows soon after which Messiah leaves the band again. In 1986 the first demo "Pure Fucking Armageddon" is released, the vocals were provided by both Necrobutcher and Euronymous. In 1987 the second demo "Deathcrush" is released, this time with Messiah on the vocals. After recording two songs he disappears from the band again, the other three songs were sung by another newcomer in the band: Maniac. Shortly afterwards both drummer Manheim and singer Maniac leave the band. They are replaced by Torben and Kittil from the Norwegian band "Vomit", but this relationship does not last long and before the end of the year they too have disappeared from Mayhem.In 1988, "Dead" joins Mayhem. Dead, originally from Sweden, initially played in the Swedish band "Morbid", but after this band ended, he was persuaded to play in the Norwegian Mayhem. Slayer was formed in Huntington Park, a suburb of Los Angeles. The line-up with Tom Araya, Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman and Dave Lombardo started performing in 1982. In the beginning, they mainly played covers of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden and later also their own work. The group started to break through in 1983. After a performance at a local venue called Woodstock, the band was approached by Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records with the offer to provide a song for the compilation album Metal Massacre III. The band agreed on the condition that Brian Slagel would also help them record a debut album. Slayer provided the song "Aggressive Perfector" for the compilation album and in December 1983 the group released their debut album Show No Mercy. After several failed projects—including AXL, Rose, L.A. Guns, and Hollywood Rose—Rose formed Guns N' Roses in 1985 with Stradlin and several fellow musicians. The final lineup consisted of Rose, Stradlin, lead guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Steven Adler. During these years, Rose lived with several band members in a run-down drug den known as the Hell House. To raise money, Rose had relationships with strippers and offered himself up for medical experiments. In 1986, Guns N' Roses independently released the EP Live?!*@ Like a Suicide. That same year, the band signed a recording contract with the major label Geffen Records. In order to sign the contract with his chosen name, Rose officially changed his name from William Bruce Rose to W. Axl Rose—the abbreviation W. because, according to him, he did not want to use the same name as his biological father and Axl after his first band.

Kirk Hammett grew up in the East Bay town of El Sobrante. Kirk Hammett got interested in music thanks to his brother Rick's huge record collection, he had many LPs by Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. At 15 he bought his first guitar and a very small amplifier. After playing with a 1978 Fender Stratocaster he started mixing guitar pickups for the 'perfect sound'. He set his sights on a 1974 Gibson Flying V and he worked several jobs to pay for his equipment. In '82-'83 he was asked by Paul Baloff to join Exodus. On April 1, 1983 Metallica called Kirk Hammett to say they had just fired their lead guitarist Dave Mustaine and asked if Kirk wanted to join the band. Metallica's manager was also the manager of Exodus. Fifteen days later Kirk played his first concert with Metallica in New Jersey. Kirk's former group Exodus had previously opened for Metallica twice, on November 29, 1982, and March 5, 1983. After the Kill 'Em All tour, Kirk went to Joe Satriani for guitar lessons.

Some time after he played with the black metal group Mayhem for the album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, he ventured into extreme right-wing waters, started to strongly oppose Christianity and became not only anti-Christian but also anti-Semitic. Vikernes' actions disturbed public order in Norway: in 1994, he was sentenced to 21 years in prison for arson of three churches and one chapel (Skjold, Åsane, Storetveit and the Holmenkollen chapel) and for the murder of Øystein 'Euronymous' Aarseth, guitarist of the band Mayhem. Vikernes confessed to killing Aarseth, but pleaded self-defense. He denied involvement in the arson. In prison, he changed his name to Varg Qisling Larssøn Vikernes. Varg is Swedish for wolf, and Qisling refers to the family name of Vidkun Quisling, who led the Nazi government in Norway during World War II. Vikernes claims to be related to Quisling. Vikernes co-founded the Allgermanische Heidnische Front and is an active promoter of Ásatrú, the ancient religion of Scandinavia.
