This is set in an alternate steampunk 1886-87 where the eruptions of Krakatoa and Mount Tambora, the dimming of the Sun, and other unknown factors caused a worldwide volcanic winter. This in turn led to widespread crop failure, the death of millions and the collapse of civilization as we know it. In response to this, several installations called "generators" were built by the British Empire and the United States in the coal-rich North, designed to be city center in the event that dropping temperatures force mass migration from the south. You are a massive group of survivors that come from London and have settled by one of these generators, naming this new city "New London". Automatons and other steampunk wonders exist. New London is lead by one man simply known as "The captain". Famine, eating sawdust, zero holidays, 24-hour work days are common now. You are refugee, wandering the ice flats in search of New London, a place to call home. Remember "The City must survive".
