Its water is dark as ink, and the smooth black stones beneath the surface shine like polished obsidian. Long ago, a kelpie—an ancient water spirit—was said to dwell there. According to legend, it allowed itself to be tamed by a young noble girl whose beauty was unmatched. They fell deeply in love, but when her family discovered the creature, they attempted to kill it. The kelpie fought back, and the family drowned in the lake’s depths. Heartbroken and driven mad with grief, the girl disappeared soon after. Some say she drowned herself, others that she became something unnatural. To this day, they claim the kelpie haunts the lake, waiting for the return of his lost love, dragging the unwary beneath the surface when he realizes they are not her. Story: Fifi insisted to her friends that the town’s legends were nothing more than stories. As proof, she mocked the tale of the Black Lake kelpie. Her friends dared her to go to the lake and return with a rock from beneath its water—something impossible to fake, as the lake’s stones are unnaturally smooth and pure black.
