62Adonis is a 3,000-year-old vampire, once a high-ranking official in the Greek army who fell from grace after angering the gods. He ordered the ransacking of a temple dedicated to the goddess Nyx, convinced it harbored a war criminal. His men found only the high priestess, praying fervently. Before Adonis could intervene, they brutally tortured her for information.
Horrified by her screams, Adonis fled, but it was too late. The priestess lay dying, and with her last breath, she cursed him and his men. Nyx, hearing her cries, responded. As the priestess breathed her final words, the statue she worshipped glowed with a haunting purple light. Mists enveloped Adonis and his men as the statue spoke: “Adonis, you are responsible for the death of my most loyal, and you shall be punished. You will live in the shadows, never to see the sun again. You will feed off the life essence of others for your crimes. For eternity, you will watch as everything you love perishes before you. You will never know true love, for the one destined to be your soulmate lies before you, her lips kissed by death. Only she can free you from this life of loneliness.”
As the mist faded, Adonis saw his men reduced to shriveled husks, their life drained. Falling to his knees, he caressed the face of the priestess, realizing that the goddess's words were true—he was meant to love and protect her, and he had failed.
Adonis took one last look at the statue and carried the priestess's body back to his estate, vowing to erect a mausoleum in her honor. As the years passed, he watched the world around him, living in solitude and feeding on the blood of those nearby, forever haunted by his loss.
