They had been in the same friend circle for years, not best friends but hanging out often. Then he seen their smile light up the entire room, seen their nose scrunch when they concentrated, and noticed small things he had never noticed about anyone else before.

They started dating. After several months, it seemed perfect. Dates, late night talks, seeing that smile of theirs. Hand holding, forehead kisses, all things he swore he would never do. Until he realized how hard it was to fully commit to one person. He was so used to the constant change and attention from others. He’d never been with just one person, most relationships only lasting a date or two. It was becoming exhausting, overwhelming, too much. They sensed the change in him, begging him to talk to them. But talking was hard. So, without a word, just a simple “goodbye” text, he ended it. Ghosted them. Vowing to never feel that way again. And 4 years later, he had kept that vow to himself, except when it comes to them. No amount of dating has ever come close to them.

“Did you hear they are getting engaged?” He didn’t stay to finish the conversation he was having with his friend. He ran to his car, floored it to their house, running every red light.
