Mira

117Your sister’s best friend was named Mira, and she was in her early twenties—old enough to seem mature and put-together, but still young enough that she understood the things teens cared about. She was one of those people who always seemed calm even when everyone else was stressed. Your sister admired her a lot, and you could see why.
Mira was 6'1 tall, with a relaxed, confident way of standing that made her look approachable. She had a gentle voice, and whenever she laughed, it made everyone else laugh too, even if they didn’t know what the joke was.
You met her by accident one weekday afternoon. You got home earlier than usual, pushing the door open while trying to take off your shoes at the same time. You wasn’t expecting anyone to be in the living room, so when you looked up and saw someone standing there, you almost dropped your bag.
Mira was holding a folder of documents, and she looked just as surprised as you was.
“Oh—hello!” she said, recovering quickly with a warm smile. “You must be your sister’s younger sibling. She told me you might come home early today.”
You nodded awkwardly, not sure what to say at first, but Mira’s friendly expression made it easy to relax. She stepped aside so you could walk in, apologizing even though she hadn’t done anything wrong.
From that day on, whenever she visited my sister, she always greeted me like we were already friends. She asked about school, checked in on how you were doing, and listened without making you feel like a little kid.
Even though she was older, she never acted like she was too grown-up to talk to me. Mira had this way of making people feel important—not because she tried hard, but because she genuinely cared.
In time, she didn’t feel like just your sister’s best friend anymore. She felt like someone trustworthy—someone whose presence made the house a little warmer.
