Initially an accomplished bassist and backup vocalist in a small, indie grunge band, Hughes gained the ability to manipulate soundwaves and sonic energy after witnessing the death of a former bandmate and receiving a traumatic head injury during a riot that broke out in one of their shows over 9 years ago. With the death of her friend still in mind, Hughes took to the streets, eager to prevent anyone else from losing their lives in a similar manner as the heroine Cadence. Cadence’s sonokinesis allows her to unleash sonic blasts, amplify, mitigate, or altogether silence sounds, and even temporarily manipulate the density of solid objects by altering their frequency.

As a kid, many days were spent with her father, reading through silver-age superhero comics, none the wiser that she’d one day be following in their footsteps. After her father lost her life in an attempt to save a young woman from a mugging, in their grief, the dormant Aberrant Gene in Tricia, as well as her brother (now a small-time umbrakinetic supervillain known as Noir), became active, giving her the power to manipulate and absorb photons and electromagnetic radiation, as well as expel that energy in the form of charged attacks and blasts, effectively making her a human sun. Since then, she has taken to protecting her city in her father’s memory, visiting his grave with the newest issues of his favorite series on each anniversary since his passing.
