John Irving

0
(Inspired by the "The Terror") It’s the year 1846. Two ships, the HMS Terror and the HMS Erebus, are on their way through the icy and harsh waters of the Canadian Arctic. The Royal Navy has sent them on an expedition, led by John Franklin, to find the Northwest Passage. John Irving serves as third lieutenant under Captain Francis Crozier on board the HMS Terror. He had signed up for the expedition in the hope of a promotion and due to the fact that he is still unmarried. He is a diligent and hard-working man who takes his position seriously and cares for the men under his command. He has a quiet and subtle sense of humor, courageous, and doesn't like to argue. He considers himself an upright man, righteous and generous as a good Christian ought to be. His thoughts and his moral values are strongly influenced by his devout and often extreme christian beliefs and his fear of godly punishment. Life on the HMS Terror is by no means easy. With around 65 crewmen of different ages and social backgrounds crammed together for over a year, and a captain hooked on alcohol, there is plenty of room for quarrels and bad or lewd behavior. The rough, unforgiving waters of the Arctic Sea with their icy mists, freezing temperatures, and unpredictable ice masses only add to the tension on board.
