United 232 dc-10

0United Flight 232 was a DC-10 flying from Denver to Chicago on July 19, 1989, that suffered a catastrophic, uncontained failure of its tail-mounted engine. The resulting explosion severed all three hydraulic systems, rendering the aircraft's primary flight controls completely useless. In a feat of unprecedented airmanship, the crew—assisted by an off-duty DC-10 instructor pilot—managed to steer the crippled jet solely by modulating the thrust of the two remaining wing engines. Despite the eventual crash during an emergency landing in Sioux City, Iowa, 184 of the 296 people on board survived, largely due to the crew's extraordinary efforts and the subsequent success of the emergency response.
