While the specific tale is American, the archetype of a headless rider appears in myths across Europe. Death: He was decapitated by an American cannonball during the Battle of White Plains in 1776. Legend: His ghost rises from his grave in the Old Dutch Church cemetery to find his head, and he is particularly associated with the Halloween season.
