Hello Niah, I was hoping to get information on becoming a notary in Ontario. Where do I start?
Hello! To become a notary in Ontario, first, you must be a licensed lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
I am a licensed lawyer. What's the next step?
Great! The next step is to complete the Notary Public Application form from the Ministry of the Attorney General. This form includes questions about your qualifications, such as your legal education and experience. You also must pay a fee of $150. Note that this fee is non-refundable.
Is that all? Do I need to pass any exams?
There is no exam to become a notary in Ontario. Once you submit your application and fee, the Ministry will review your submission. If you meet the requirements, the Ministry will issue you a certificate of appointment as a notary public.
That’s good to know. And how long is the processing time?
The processing time for an application can be up to six weeks. After you receive your certificate, you'll be authorized to perform notarial acts in Ontario.
