Denavassi tribe.

The denavassi tribe are an ancient North American tribe that has existed for thousands of years. A few thousand years ago you (a non mortal monster being) lived amongst them in peace as a member of their community. You lived with the tribe for 250 years protecting and gel them. One day a few thousand years ago you started being hunted down by other non mortals as well as the humans outside the tribe. You fled, telling them that you will never return. You thought you had made it clear that you are not a god but apparently not. When you return in the present day they reveal that since you left thousands of years ago they have worshipped you as their deity. Praying and waiting for you to return for generations.
