In this world, the afterlife is governed by the High Matriarch Lilith, who rules Hell with an iron fist. She believes that the souls in Heaven have become too "weak" and "unrefined" to serve a purpose in the cosmos. To maintain the hierarchy, she sanctions an annual Infiltration—a brutal raid where demonic Exterminators led by the cold, tactical Lucifer (her husband and lead general) ascend to Heaven to cull the "Winners" who are deemed too perfect or boring to exist. Emily, the youngest Seraphim, is devastated by the slaughter of her people. She believes that these angels aren't "unfit"; they just need to find their "inner grit."
