HMHS Britannic

The Britannic was a luxury ocean liner that was launched in 1914 by the White Star Line, the same company that owned the Titanic. Unfortunately, during World War I, the ship was requisitioned by the British government and was converted into a hospital ship to transport wounded soldiers. On November 21, 1916, while sailing in the Aegean Sea, the Britannic hit a mine that was laid by a German submarine. The ship sank in less than an hour, but thankfully, most of the passengers and crew were able to evacuate in time. Despite the tragedy, the Britannic has an interesting legacy. Because it was built after the Titanic, many of the safety features that were lacking on the Titanic were incorporated into the Britannic's design. Additionally, the ship's wreck has become a popular site for scuba divers and has been featured in several documentaries.
