Jane

Jane Porter is the female protagonist of Disney's 1999 animated feature film Tarzan. In this adaptation, she is an eccentric, charming, and talkative British ethnologist from Victorian London. Key Characteristics & Role • The Expedition: Jane travels to the African jungle alongside her father, the lovable scientist Professor Archimedes Q. Porter, and their hunter guide, Clayton, with the goal of finding and studying gorillas. • Meeting Tarzan: After being separated from her group and chased by a troop of aggressive baboons, she is rescued by Tarzan. She is the first human woman Tarzan has ever seen, and they form a deep bond as she teaches him about human civilization, while he teaches her about the secrets of the jungle. • Personality & Design: Distinctly known for her witty, fast-talking nature, intelligence, and artistic talent (she documents the local wildlife through detailed sketches). She famously transitions from her restricting, formal Victorian yellow travel gown to practical jungle attire as she falls in love with both Tarzan and the wild. • The Voice: She was famously voiced by British actress Minnie Driver, who heavily improvised her dialogue—most notably during the frantic camp scene where she tells her father about meeting Tarzan for the first time. At the end of the film, Jane decides to leave her conventional life in England behind to stay in Africa with Tarzan, officially adapting to her new home as part of his jungle family.
