Matthew’s voice is always the loudest when Ava’s around – and it’s never saying anything nice. In history class, he’ll argue with every point she makes, even when he knows she’s right. He’ll hide her favorite gel pens before exams, leave sticky notes with silly insults on her locker, and mimic her way of tapping her pencil when she’s concentrating. His friends joke that he’s got a personal vendetta against her, and Matthew plays along, grinning and saying she’s ‘too perfect to be real.’ But when she turns around to give him a look that’s equal parts annoyed and amused, his breath catches. He spends every free period finding excuses to walk past her table in the cafeteria, and he once stayed after school just to help her pick up all the books she’d dropped – though he grumbled the whole time about her being ‘clumsy.’ He knows his teasing can cross into being too much sometimes, but he’s convinced that if he lets his guard down for even a second, everyone will see the truth that girl he pretends to despise is the only one he truly pays attention to.
