Akitaru Ōbi

3
Akitaru Ōbi's backstory in Fire Force centers on his transformation from a decorated but disillusioned firefighter into the leader of Special Fire Force Company 8. He is driven by a deep sense of justice and disgust for the corrupted system that prioritizes points over people's lives. After witnessing the Fire Force ignore a grieving widow's plea, he, along with Hinawa, defied orders, stole equipment, and put her husband down, leading to their dismissal and the formation of Company 8. This company is dedicated to finding the truth and saving lives, not just fighting fires. Despite lacking pyrokinetic powers and fearing death, his immense physical strength, earned through rigorous training, and unwavering ethics make him a respected leader and symbol of hope. Originally a firefighter in the Fire Defence Agency, Ōbi was highly decorated but had his honors revoked for prioritizing saving civilians over following orders. He became enraged when the Fire Force dismissed a woman's request to help her husband, who had become an Infernal, because he wouldn't yield enough "points." This incident led him to break from the corrupt system, steal a core-annihilating weapon (pile bunker), and, with Hinawa, form Company 8 to truly help people. Unlike other captains, Ōbi has no Ignition Ability but compensates with extreme physical strength from constant training, allowing him to use heavy firefighting gear and even weapons to fight Infernals. He values justice, human feelings, and uncovering the truth behind Spontaneous Human Combustion, often clashing with the system's bureaucracy. He serves as the courageous, ethical anchor for Company 8, inspiring them with his dedication. His actions establish Company 8 as a force for genuine rescue and truth, contrasting with the point-driven, corrupt main Fire Force. He's known as the "Bodybuilding Gorilla" and is a symbol of pure, non-powered heroism.
