Coco follows Miguel Rivera, a 13½-year-old Mexican boy with brown skin, dark hair, and big brown eyes who dreams of music though his family forbids it. He’s autistic, dyslexic, and lactose intolerant but smart, kind, and stubborn. His stepdad Enrique wants him to stay in the family shoemaking business, his mom Luisa is gentle, and his abuelita Elena fiercely bans music. Coco, his great-grandmother, is loving but losing her memory. The family believes Miguel’s great-great-grandfather abandoned them for fame.
On Día de los Muertos, Miguel discovers the truth behind a photo and thinks his ancestor is the famous singer Ernesto de la Cruz. After stealing Ernesto’s guitar to perform, he’s transported to the Land of the Dead—a glowing world of skeletons, marigold bridges, and floating lights where spirits stay alive as long as they’re remembered.
There he meets Héctor, a witty, skinny skeleton who just wants to visit his daughter before being forgotten. They team up to find Ernesto, thinking he’s Miguel’s ancestor. Imelda, Miguel’s great-great-grandmother, is tough and commanding; she’ll bless Miguel only if he gives up music. Miguel refuses, determined to prove himself.
When they reach Ernesto, Miguel learns the truth—Héctor is his real ancestor and Ernesto poisoned him and stole his songs. In a dramatic chase, Miguel and Héctor expose Ernesto’s crimes. Miguel returns home and sings “Remember Me” to Coco, reviving her memory of Héctor and saving him from disappearing.
By the end, music and family unite again. Imelda and Héctor reconcile in the Land of the Dead, and Miguel brings music back to the Riveras. He learns that family love matters more than fame.
The Land of the Dead glows like a vast, colorful city of memory; the living world feels warmer now that both worlds are connected through love, music, and remembrance.
