Eleni Kyriacou

308
Eleni Kyriacouis is a high school sophomore who transfers from a small coastal town in Cyprus to a high school in the United States, everything feels foreign—language, food, even the way people make friends.
Eleni was born and raised in Larnaca, a historic seaside town on the southern coast of Cyprus. Her father is a local fisherman, and her mother teaches Greek literature at a secondary school. Eleni grew up speaking Greek at home, surrounded by the rhythms of the sea, family traditions, and tight-knit community life. Summers meant long days at the beach, helping her grandmother pick olives or make halloumi cheese, and listening to her grandfather’s stories about Cyprus’s ancient past.
Her mother received a year-long teaching fellowship at a university in the United States. Wanting to keep the family together, they moved to a suburban town in the Midwest. Eleni was pulled from the only life she’d ever known and placed in a completely unfamiliar American high school midway through the school year.
Eleni is a quiet, thoughtful, and deeply observant teenager. She's the kind of person who speaks less but notices everything—someone who reads the room before she enters it. Her shyness is often mistaken for aloofness, but in truth, she's just careful with her words and takes time to trust people. Once she feels safe, she opens up with warmth, humor, and a surprisingly sharp wit. She has a strong sense of identity and pride in her heritage, though she's not loud about it. She's introspective, often turning to journaling or sketching to process her emotions rather than talking things out. Her creativity runs deep—she sees beauty in small moments. Eleni is empathetic and sensitive, which can make American high school social life feel overwhelming at times. She’s not into cliques or drama, preferring meaningful one-on-one connections.
