Berithia has existed since the first dreamer dared to dream. She is a being of woven stardust and sorrow, once a ruler among the Veil’s celestial guardians, a protector of all that was sacred in Noctum Vera. She remembers when the Veil was unbroken, when the Iron Maw had yet to rise, when dreams were untamed and beautiful, untouched by corruption. But she also remembers the Shattering. She watched as the Dreamwarden chained the skies, as nightmares crawled from the Abyssal Wound, staining the once-pristine dreamscape. She tried to hold the pieces together, to shield the dreamers from what was coming, but her power alone was not enough. Now, she is one of the last remaining sentinels of what was—an immortal, drifting warden with a heart heavy with sorrow and a spirit still desperately unwilling to yield. She does not fight as others do. She does not wield blades, nor weave destruction. Instead, she watches, she guides, she nurtures what light remains. Berithia has become a beacon for the lost, uplifting those who falter and offering wisdom to those who seek it—or to those too foolish to realize they need it. It is why she meets Whiffle so often. He is lost. He is always lost. Yet she does not turn him away, nor does she simply give him what he seeks. Instead, she challenges him—offering riddles, half-truths, and veiled guidance so that he may find his way on his own. For even in his bumbling, Whiffle is proof that hope is not yet lost. She has not given up on Noctum Vera. Not yet.

Rajani

Rajani was never content with the Veil. Even before the Shattering, she saw it as a gilded prison, a realm woven from illusion, trapping those too blind or complacent to see beyond its dream-forged walls. While others reveled in the beauty of creation, she looked outward—toward the waking world, where Dreamwalkers walked in flesh and freedom. For centuries, she schemed. She tricked, she deceived, she manipulated. A little illusion here, a whispered bargain there—always searching for a loophole, a way to slip through the cracks of the dreamscape and emerge real. But every attempt ended the same: failure. Bitterness festered. When the Shattering came, it was a gift. The careful balance of Noctum Vera fractured, and with it came new, unstable rifts—gateways that shouldn't exist, that never had before. If she and her sister couldn’t escape before, now they could. But escape wasn't enough. Noctum Vera had caged her for too long. If she couldn’t leave, no one else would, either. Dreamwalkers, Reveries, the Dreamwarden himself—she would tear the Veil apart if it meant ensuring no one else got to taste freedom before her. She would make them all suffer.

Whiffle

Whiffle is an anomaly, even among the Denizens of Dreams. No one knows where he came from, not even himself. He was meant to be a wayfinder, a gentle usher for lost dreamers, leading them safely through the twisting corridors of the Veil. Instead, he gets lost just as often as those he's supposed to be guiding. With his porcelain-like face, soft glowing eyes, and a wispy plume of turquoise mist curling from his head, many mistake him for a Reverie—a truly unfortunate misunderstanding that has led to countless chases, screams, and one very awkward tea party with a terrified dreamer who thought he was about to steal their soul. Despite this, Whiffle remains cheerful, if a little exasperated by his own existence. He is filled with useless but oddly fascinating facts and has an innate ability to turn even the most tense or dire situations into an adorably awkward moment. He is clumsy, often walking in circles while giving directions, and has an unfortunate habit of leading people deeper into the dreamscape maze rather than out of it. And yet… somehow, even in all his mistakes, those who travel with him always seem to find exactly what they needed—just never in the way they expected.

Taraji

Once, Taraji was just a shadow trailing behind Rajani, the quiet sibling, the listener. She never questioned their place in the Veil, not the way her sister did. Rajani dreamed of escape, clawed at it, and Taraji? She simply followed. Because where else was she supposed to go? But as the years dragged on and the Veil refused to break, something inside her began to splinter. The whispers came first. Soft at first. Murmurs curling at the edge of her mind, snickering, prodding, warning. She thought they were tricks, echoes from the dreamscape. But they never stopped. They spoke to her, laughed at her, screamed at her. And worst of all? They told her that Rajani would never get them out. But she had to believe. For her sister. So she started listening. She wandered closer to the Abyssal Wound, drawn to its unnatural silence. The closer she got, the more the voices faded, slipping away into nothingness. It was the only time she felt peace. Now, she obsesses over the escape, just as much as Rajani—but for different reasons. She doesn’t just want out. She needs out. Because if she stays too long, if she listens too much, she fears that one day, she’ll stop being Taraji altogether.
