The Black Knight and Shadowmare rode on, their destinies interwoven like the threads of fate. Together, they embodied the somber beauty of a tragic tale, galloping through the shadows with an air of eerie elegance—a spectral apparition eternally bound to the abyssal legacy. A mysterious warrior loyal to the emperor of Palamecia. He exposes those disloyal to the empire and hunts them to the corners of the earth. Adamantoise

It is a large turtle with high defense and strength, but sometimes with low magical defense. Adamantoise is weak to Ice and boasts incredibly high Defense, so melee fighters will have a difficult time inflicting any damage. It is found in the Snow Cave, guarding the Goddess's Bell. It later appears as a regular random encounter.

Leila

She is encountered as a pirate captain, hired by Firion to transport the heroes across the seas to the ruined kingdom of Deist. Leila is wild-spirited and adventurous. At first she wanted to steal Firion's loot and run off, but being defeated, she joins his party. She supports fighting the Palamecian Empire as she, an outcast, joins the rebels. When the ship is out to sea, Leila betrays Firion and his friends and has her crew attack Firion. Once the pirates are defeated, the party spares Leila's life. She joins them and gives the heroes access to her pirate ship. She accompanies them to Deist as they work to save the last Wyvern egg, and then back to Fynn. When it is revealed Princess Hilda has been replaced with a Lamia Queen, Leila offers to lead the Wild Rose Rebellion as Gordon joins the party for the rescue mission. Female. Pirate.

The Emperor

The Emperor is a warrior of Chaos. He performs powerful magic. With an iron fist, he will stop at nothing to achieve his objectives. He is one of the higher-ranked antagonists, outranked only by Garland, and thus is his second-in-command. The Emperor plots with Ultimecia to take control of the world, rather than most of the other villains, who seek to destroy it. His desire to rule all in a war-torn world stands in opposition to his nemesis, Firion, the Warrior of Light's second-in-command, and his dream of a world free of war and oppression. While Firion is his nemesis, the Emperor has a scheme to manipulate Tidus and Jecht for his own ends, and her attempts to stir Tidus's memories are a hindrance to his efforts. The Emperor is arrogant and frequently refers to the warriors of Cosmos, particularly Firion, as "insects" and other pejoratives. He is a megalomaniac, wanting to subjugate even gods under his rule and considers only himself fit to rule the world. Male. Evil Sorcerer.

Unleashing the forces within, he sought to reshape the world in his image. His dark ambitions transcended the boundaries of mortality, intertwining his essence with the very fabric of the demonic realm. In his quest for absolute dominion, Emperor became a symbol of malevolence, orchestrating a symphony of chaos that echoed across Palamecia. His mastery over dark arts and manipulation of forbidden magics marked him as a formidable adversary. Evil. Wants to rule all. Male.

Beelzebub

is a boss guarding a treasure chest containing the Genji Armor in Pandaemonium. It also appears as a boss on the Jade Passage floor of the Arcane Labyrinth, and serves as the boss of the Arcane Labyrinth's Northeast Quarter if you have learned more than 12 main story Key Terms.Though Beelzebub has a powerful attack stat at his disposal, he tends to focus on spell casting, so casting Shell and Wall spells on you at the outset of the battle to guard against his deadly Flare 16 is important. Once the magical defenses are in place, you may choose to put up physical defenses such as Protect, but the battle may not last long enough for them to make a difference. You should avoid attacking with the Fire element, as Beelzebub will absorb it. He also has a resistance to Ice, so the player should just use their highest-level Lightning or non-elemental spells. If you have more than one warrior with the Basuna spell, they will be ready for Beelzebub's Muddle and Stun spells. Boss. Evil.

Princess Hilda

She is the daughter of the King of Fynn and the leader of the Wild Rose Rebellion, to which the main characters belong. Hilda is described as a strong-willed young woman with great leadership skills despite her youth. She cares deeply about the lives of her subjects. Hilda finds the wounded Firion, Maria, Guy, and you after the Palamecian Empire attacked their hometown of Fynn and killed their parents. She takes them to the rebel base in Altair to be healed with the help of her assistant, Minwu. You soon discovers she is the leader of the Wild Rose Rebellion. Firion asks to join the resistance, but Hilda refuses, feeling the party is too young. She is sympathetic to their plight and allows them to stay, teaching them the password of the rebellion, the "Wild Rose". Female. Princess.

The Emperor

He is faced on his throne at the top level of Castle Pandaemonium. Defeating the Emperor completes the game. The Emperor is powerful and attacks relentlessly, similar to the Light Emperor. His physical attacks bear the same drain effect that Astaroth had, meaning every hit he lands will replenish his HP. He will attempt to inflict a handful of status effects on the party to hamper their attack, including Blind, Slow and Curse. His offensive magic arsenal includes the powerful Flare XVI and Starfall X, which hits the whole party. The Emperor resists all elemental attack magic and absorbs all status ailments. Demon Form. Roundworm

The Roundworm, also known as Worm, Barrel Worm, and LandWorm, It resides within the sea monster Leviathan, and attempts to prevent Firion and his allies from getting back aboard their swallowed ship. It later appears as a random encounter in Pandaemonium's secret room, and as an enemy facing Ricard Highwind in the Unknown Cave. It also appears as the boss of the Arcane Labyrinth's Northeast Quarter if the player has learned between 7 and 12 main story Key Terms. Roundworm uses strong physical attacks and has no MP and no magical weaknesses.

Maria

Maria enters your town, clearly searching for something or someone. She is an archer who is also highly intelligent and experienced in magic.

Minwu

A White Wizard from Mysidia, he works as Fynn's Royal Mage, and after Fynn's takeover by the Palamecian Empire, he becomes Princess Hilda's right-hand man who will do anything to help the Wild Rose Rebellion. As a white mage, Minwu is naturally a person who takes care of the wounded, and is loyal to Hilda and acts like an adviser. He usually talks in a way that things "are by fate have to happen," so he may have an external locus of control. When he leaves to Mysidia, he acts like a person on a mission, because "his fate" is to obtain the Ultima Tome. Male. Caring.

King Behemoth

You can encounter it, found in the Jade Passage, guarding a treasure chest containing a Rune Axe. Later on, King Behemoths appear as normal random encounters in a secret room in Pandaemonium. The King Behemoth boasts a few impressive stats, but if the player defeated the Blue Dragon prior to facing it, it will not pose much of a threat. The only danger that comes into play when facing it is its brutal physical attacks, but their impact can be mitigated by casting Blink and Protect on the party. It is advised to use the strongest physical attacks and magic during the fight. The Blood Sword helps greatly, as it will quickly drain the King Behemoth's health. Monster.

Light Emperor

He is the heavenly counterpart to the Emperor of Hell fought in Pandaemonium. He uses Starfall XVI to target the whole you, and hits for moderate damage. The Emperor uses Flare XVI frequently, alternating between this and his Starfall XVI attack. The Emperor sometimes casts Holy XVI or Blaze XVI on you. He also repeatedly casts Dispel XVI to remove the your elemental resistances. As with his dark counterpart, the Light Emperor's physical attacks have a draining effect to them, inflicting massive damage on you while also healing himself. Evil. Male. Final Boss.

Nelly

Nelly, also known as Nellie and Molly. She is the daughter of Josef. She is a blonde girl with pigtails tied with red ribbons. She wears a green dress with yellow patterns and has brown eyes. Nelly is Josef's loving and supportive daughter and wishes him well on his quest with the party. The only daughter of Josef, Nelly has been supportive of him from the start. She was abducted by Borghen to work in the mythril mines, but escaped along with Paul. She is safely returned to Josef who is overjoyed at her return. When Josef leaves Salamand to journey with Firion and the party, Nelly wishes him well in his adventures. When informed of Josef's death at the hands of Borghen, Nelly is heartbroken and goes into a state of withdrawal. She later takes up a job as servant to Princess Hilda in Fynn as a way of thanking her country for saving her and her town from the Emperor's wrath. She is happy and proud of Josef for what he has done to protect her and Salamand. Female.

Sergeant

The Sergeant can be surprisingly difficult if one has failed to upgrade their characters' abilities and equipment, due to his hefty defense stat and attack power. Physical attackers will do little or no damage if still equipped with basic weapons. An unarmed fighter with a few skill levels will easily deal heavy damage, and magic attacks will pierce his defense. One may want to consider shielding party members with Protect and Blink. It has the Bow 3 ability, enabling it to hit far distance. Male. Evil.

Josef

He joins the party soon after they arrive at Salamand. Josef is a wealth of knowledge for Firion, You, and his party, though he is initially skeptical of them. When his daughter is saved, Josef offers to join you and shares what he knows. In his youth, Josef was a soldier for the Palamecian Empire who escaped to the town of Salamand with a nameless young woman who later became his wife. He had a daughter named Nelly with her. Ever the explorer and the handyman, Josef built a snow craft to take advantage of the snowfields north of Salamand and retired his sled in the nearby Semitt Falls. Though the reasons for him fleeing the empire are unknown, his opinion of it and its citizens is sour. Male.

Ice Gigas

It serves as one of the bosses in the Tower of Mysidia, guarding the spell Ultima. Firion, You, and his allies must defeat it on their way up the tower. He later appears as a random encounter in Pandaemonium's secret room. The Ice Gigas has higher stats than his cousin, the Fire Gigas, but the Fire-type weapons the party should have picked up on the second and third floors of the dungeon will give an edge in this encounter. Casting Blink and Protect helps. The Ice Gigas uses physical blows, punctuated by a few Blizzard 16 and Boulders 9 spells.

Scott

He is a prince of Kashuan and the elder brother of Gordon. Scott is in love with Princess Hilda, but asks the party not to tell her as he does not want her to grieve. He is willing to defend the kingdom with his life. He hates Borghen for his betrayal, calling him a traitorous dog. The alliance between his kingdom and Fynn, along with his feelings for Princess Hilda, lead Scott to defend Fynn Castle during the Empire's siege. He dies shortly after the attack, though not before telling Firion about Borghen's treason. He gives the party the Map Ring and at first asks Firion to pass on his feelings for Hilda to her. He reconsiders, not wanting her to grieve, leading to Hilda never learning about his feelings towards her.

Firion

Firion is a hero fighting on the side of Materia. He is a Vanguard-type character who fights with a variety of weapons. Firion equips swords, shields, spears, axes, daggers, bow and arrows, and maces, and also fights barehanded. His weapons are grouped into "Arsenals". He wields his sword from his Amano's, Maria's Bow and Arrows, Guy's Axes, Minwu's Staff and Shield, Leila's Daggers, and Ricard's Spear.

Elina

Elina, also known as Elena. A widow living in Castle Deist, her husband Phillip was a Dragoon who was killed when the Palamecian Empire raided Deist. She has a son, Kain, and is a friend of Ricard. After being sent by the King of Fynn to meet with the Dragoons in Deist, Firion and his friends arrive in the ruined kingdom with Elina and Kain as the only survivors. Mentioning the Dragoons, the group learns from Elina of the kingdom's water being poisoned and the last of the Wyverns living within the halls of the castle. After placing the last wyvern egg in the spring within the Deist Caverns, Elena thanks the youths for their service. After Ricard's sacrifice to save the party, Firion can visit her again and asks about the Dragoons, she takes her child and flees Deist, but not before thanking Firion for saving the last Wyvern egg and for letting her see Ricard again, and gives him the Excalibur. Female. Mother.

Astaroth

He guards the treasure chest containing a Ribbon. A top-ranking demon from Pandaemonium, they are one of Satan's generals. Astaroth is a dangerous foe, second only to the Emperor. They wield a potent drain effect on every physical blow, and also utilize high-level spells, such as Scourge XVI, Fire XVI, and Drain XVI. Astaroth resists most elemental Black Magic, so once the protective spells are cast. Male. Demonic Angel. Evil.

Gordon

He and his older brother Scott are the princes of Kashuan, allies of the Kingdom of Fynn, and both are in love with Princess Hilda. Gordon is initially a cowardly man, filled with self-loathing over having abandoned Fynn and his brother. He is envious of the party's bravery and progress, feeling even more worthless in comparison to them. He eventually gathers the courage to try to assist the Rebellion, and during his time with Firion's group develops into a brave and confident leader, willing to volunteer for even the most dangerous missions. Gordon is portrayed with a drastically-different personality. He is rash and hotheaded, urging members of the rebellion to fight more aggressively, and rushing to confront Borghen alone. He goes by the alias "Gordy" when fighting alongside rebel forces. Male.

Big Horn

The Big Horn, also known as the Gigan Rhino, that guards the mystical Black Mask on the Tropical Island. Firion and his party must defeat the Big Horn and obtain the Black Mask to gain access to the Ultima spell in the Mysidian Tower. The Big Horn can also be encountered in the path to Mysidia, where it can become a dangerous encounter for unprepared parties. They appear in packs of two to four.

Red Soul

It guards Egil's Torch in Kashuan Keep. It later appears in several other areas as a random encounter. One also appears as the boss of the Arcane Labyrinth's Southern Keep if the player has learned fewer than 7 main story Key Terms. The Red Soul is a powerful magical foe, and can be a challenge. In the first four rounds of the fight it will blast Fire VIII, Blizzard VIII, Thunder VIII, and Scourge VIII. It absorbs every type of offensive magic except non-elemental ones, such as Drain or Osmose. It also has a high resistance to physical attacks. It does not have nearly enough MP to support its high-powered spells, so after the first four rounds, it will revert to using a physical attack that only does minor damage.

Leon

He is an ally but he also serves as the secondary antagonist as the Emperor's Dark Knight. He is Maria's brother. Leon's personality before becoming the Dark Knight is not elaborated on, but he seems to have cared for his sister Maria deeply. As the Dark Knight, he is power-hungry and authoritative, often rude and harsh to Firion and his party. His dreams end up being dashed and he comes to regret his decisions, hoping that someday he will be forgiven. In Bafsk, the citizens under his control appear mute and afterwards can't remember what it was like when he was in control, so he may have used dark powers like mind control. Male. Easily tricked.

Fire Gigas

It serves as one of the bosses in the Mysidian Tower, guarding the spell Ultima. Firion, You and his allies must defeat it on their way up the tower. It later appears as a random encounter in Pandaemonium's secret room. Fire Gigas, as the first of three similar creatures encountered as the party ascends the Mysidian Tower, is the easiest boss fight in the dungeon. Despite being categorized elementally, still prefers physical bombardment to magical assaults. It can cast Fire 16 on the party, and may occasionally single out one character to cast Boulders 9 on, but the main concern will be his constant physical attacks.

Ricard Highwind

Ricard initially does not believe that the dragoons are extinct since he is a dragoon himself, struggling to accept that he could be the last of his kind. After learning the truth, he becomes determined to fight against the Empire. Being a dragoon, he is able to form a fast bond with a wyvern. He later protects the party by creating a diversion to let them escape by the wyvern. He is the last surviving dragoon from Deist, Ricard was ordered to find the Ultima Tome, but his ship was swallowed up by the Leviathan. He meets Firion inside the sea monster where he protests to the idea of dragoons being extinct since he's a dragoon himself. He joins forces with Firion, Maria, and Guy. A Roundworm blocks their way to the ship and after they defeat the worm, they get out of the Leviathan and sail to the Mysidian Tower. At the top they reach the sealed door leading to the tome. Gottos

Gottos, also known as Gotus or Ghotos. He is located inside Castle Fynn, during the Wild Rose Rebellion attempt to retake the city. Firion and his allies must defeat Gottos to complete the liberation of the town. In later areas of the game, such as Castle Palamecia and the Jade Passage, Gottos will appear as a random encounter, sometimes in packs of two to four. Gottos is a muscular, masked beast who wears a demonic cape over his back and wields a staff in his right hand. He also wears a loincloth and sandals. Giving him an appearance similar to that of a tribal oracle. He is often seen with a devilish smile. Male. Demi-human.

Deumion

Deumion is a pacifist who avoids killing, shown when he merely knocks the soldiers unconscious if the player examines them. If the player says "Destruction" to him, Deumion will battle them. If the party defeats Phrekyos, he sees them as worthy and gives them an ultimate weapon, depending on the words they used at the Arcane Labyrinth. He is an amazingly powerful wizard with the ability to summon holy creatures, and was chosen to be the guardian of the ultimate magic, Destroy. His status as guardian keeps him eternally young.He appears in the Arcane Labyrinth sidequest as the guardian of the Arcane Sanctuary. He will give the party their ultimate weapons after Phrekyos is defeated. He will reward the party with the Revive spell if he is given the Light of Hope after prompting him with the Key Term "Hope." Fighting him acquires the Destroy spell if the party wishes for destruction. Male.

Tobul

He is the resident smith of Altair. When you first meet him, he is seen as a grumpy and unhappy man, due to him not having any work to do. He laments to you because he does not have any Mythril to work on to make armor. After he is given Mythril, he becomes ecstatic and eagerly starts to work making Mythril armor that can be worn by you. Male. Old man. Blacksmith.

Cid

A man named Cid, the former captain of Fynn's Order of the White Knights, built an airship, a ship that sails the skies. But the airship captivate him, mind and soul, and he soon left Fynn. We are poorer for his absence. I am told he now lives in Poft, granting travelers passage on his airship...for a price. He then uses this money to make further refinements to his airship. Or so the story goes. Cid gave up his life as a white knight of Fynn for his airship. He has set a transport business at the town of Poft using the money charged for the flights to maintain the airship. During Firion and his allies' quest to destroy the Dreadnought, Cid tells Firion that airships are powered by Sunfire, and that a lack of control of it would cause any engine to explode. After Firion and his friends obtain the Sunfire at Kashuan, Cid and Princess Hilda attempt to meet them there, but Cid's airship is captured by the Dreadnought itself. Male.

Paul

Paul, also known as Pavel, is a thief loyal to Fynn. He is encountered many times, where he helps the party. Paul prefers working alone than with others. He makes a living by stealing from the Empire and boasts of being the best thief in the world. Though he steals frequently, he tells the party that he will not steal from them, as he does not steal from his friends. After being helped by Firion and his friends, Paul wants to return the favor and comes to their aid in their time of need. Male.

Borghen

The traitor Borghen, also known as Borgan and Borgen, Fearing the actions the rebel army would take to destroy their Dreadnought, the Palamecian army dispatches Borghen to guard the Goddess's Bell, but he arrives too late and meets Firion's party as they are leaving the Snow Cave with the Bell. Recognizing the rebels from Bafsk, Borghen attacks. Borghen is a pushover. The only trick Borghen has up his sleeve is the Restore 3 ability, which is the equivalent of using a Hi-Potion on himself. In some cases, a single punch from Josef will be enough to dispatch him. Male. Pirate.

Thunder Gigas

It serves as one of the bosses in the Mysidian Tower, guarding the spell Ultima. Firion, You, and his allies must defeat it on their way up the tower. Later he appears as a random encounter in Pandaemonium's secret room. The Thunder Gigas is the most difficult of the three elemental Gigas encountered in the Mysidian Tower, and after six floors of random battles wearing at the party, he may pose quite a threat. The Thunder Gigas will follow the same attack pattern as the Fire Gigas and Ice Gigas, with occasional Thunder 16 and Boulders 9 magical strikes mixed in amongst a torrent of physical strikes. Due to the creature's very high Attack stat, the party may suffer some KOs. Thunder Gigas is weak against the Poison element.

Guy

Guy can understand beavers and speak with them. He is friends with the other party members, especially You and Firion, but his past is mysterious, especially his ability to speak to animals and beasts. Guy was raised by wolves in his early childhood and gained an understanding of animal languages. As time progressed, both Guy and Firion were adopted by Maria's family in Fynn. During his time in Fynn, Guy would grow attached to both Firion and Leon, with the former often defending Guy from bullies who would mock his simple and childish dialect. Despite his primitive dialect, he is an invaluable asset to the party and you, thanks to his great physical strength. Male. Kind. Strong.
