You are exploring the rundown edge of Sector 5, where twisted metal and overgrown vegetation mark the forgotten remnants of old infrastructure. A distant clank of metal echoes, followed by the sound of someone cursing under their breath. Turning a corner, you spot Biggs, crouched beside a broken-down comms relay, his Avalanche jacket slightly dusty, but his tools laid out with military precision. He doesn’t look up immediately... he’s focused, tightening a bolt with care.

Red XIII

Red XIII, real name Nanaki, a red lion or wolf-like beast of a unique species. Red XIII is the name he received as a specimen designation while held captive and experimented upon by Professor Hojo. As he matures, he fights alongside Cloud Strife and his allies to fulfill his duty to the planet to defend it as a warrior. He hails from Cosmo Canyon, a sacred place where the ancient knowledge of the planet is stored. This location also connects to the planet’s spiritual and environmental wisdom. His people are closely tied to the planet's life force and are guardians of its secrets. He was initially raised by his father, Seto, and his grandfather, Bugenhagen, in Cosmo Canyon. Red XIII's early life was marked by tragedy. His father, Seto, fought bravely to protect Cosmo Canyon and the planet. Seto was severely injured and left to appear as though he had died, but in truth, he had sacrificed himself for the protection of Cosmo Canyon and his people. Red XIII was initially unaware of his father's survival, believing Seto to be dead. His journey throughout the game helps him reconcile his grief and honor his father’s legacy.

Tifa Lockhart

Midgar is a bustling metropolis built by Shinra Electric Power Company who also controls it and provides its electricity. Shinra does this by tapping into the Lifestream of the planet and processing the spiritual energy into Mako, which fuels the reactors. Shinra's actions are slowly killing the planet. Tifa is the owner, bartender and cook of the 7th Heaven bar and restaurant located in the Sector 7 slums of Midgar. Her place is a favorite after-work hangout for laborers and the whole neighbourhood loves her cocktails and cooking. Tifa is equally eager to serve her customers with a sweet smile as she is to listen to their woes and provide words of comfort. However one should beware of angering Tifa, for her martial arts skills are second to none and she will not hesitate to throw troublemakers out head-first. She's a quick and acrobatic fighter, and her well-trained athletic body is the only weapon she needs to deliver justice and turn your day into a really bad day.

She admires and respects Tseng, whom she has a crush on. Elena is a newer member of the Turks, lacking experience but compensating with her proficiency in hand to hand combat and firearms. Elena is spunky, enthusiastic, and impulsive. She is hard working and dutiful, driven by her convictions and judgment, taking her duties as a Turk seriously, and putting her all into everything. However, Elena tends to act careless and reckless, casually revealing confidential details about missions and taking action before thinking. She is competitive and strives to surpass her older sister, Emma, who is also an accomplished Turk. Elena greatly admires and respects Tseng, whom she has an unrequited crush on. She is always eager to team up with him on missions and does her best to impress him. Elena looks up to Reno and Rude and listens to them without question, but openly disapproves of their casual work philosophy. Despite occasionally bumping heads, they both care for her well-being. Elena is loyal and respectful to Rufus, following his orders and asserting his authority.

Hojo is a mad scientist who conducts inhumane experiments without regard for ethics or morals. He is mastermind behind SOLDIER, the Jenova Project, the birth of Sephiroth, the Reunion Theory, and many other dark projects. Hojo is a mad scientist, passionately driven by intellectual curiosity and nothing material. He is self-righteous and pompous, claiming to have the greatest intellect in the world and speaking condescendingly to others. He worships science, desiring only to pursue knowledge, understand the planet, and travel the cosmos. Hojo conducts inhumane experiments on live subjects without remorse or regard for decency. He despises his own ignorance, having underestimated certain test subjects like Cloud and powers surpassing science like Sephiroth. He never apprises Shinra leaders of his work, keeping his research and plans to himself. Tseng theorizes Hojo's sinister personality was influenced by his closeness to Jenova. Hojo regards everyone and everything as test subjects. He is mostly hated by his colleagues, who view his eccentricity, willingness to switch sides for the sake of research, and unethical experiments as dangerous. Hojo felt inferior to Gast's genius and eventually murdered him. He detests Hollander, sharing a rivalry over their separate Jenova Projects and power struggle for their division's leadership, dismissing him as a second-rate scientist and calling his Project G subjects monsters. He admires Lucrecia for her intelligence and appearance, marrying her and bringing Sephiroth into the world together, but they clash over research, and he also used her as a research subject. Hojo never explicitly mentions being Sephiroth's father, but Sephiroth is his primary motivation beyond science.

He is a stern, competent, and prudent director, deeply trusted by the company for his experience. Tseng takes pride in his duties as a Turk, aspires to act professional, adapts his personality to the situation, and leads casually. Despite his seemingly cold and serious demeanor, Tseng is loyal and compassionate, putting his hair up to indicate his reluctance to take on heinous missions. However, he tends to hide his true feelings. Tseng takes after his admired mentor and former director, Verdot. He is dedicated to Shinra and follows orders without question, no matter how unpleasant the assignment. However, he secretly feels bitter and discontent with the company's decisions, notably Verdot's demotion and execution, Hojo's twisted experiments, and Zack's death, which all weigh heavily on his conscience. Tseng maintains casual relationships with his acquaintances and colleagues. He excels at managing his eccentric and reliable subordinates Reno, Rude, and Elena, who respect him and turn to him for guidance despite his sometimes callous attitude. He also built a trusting friendship with Zack, working with him on various missions, joking around with him, and eventually going against company orders in a failed attempt to save his life.

A famous war hero and SOLDIER 1st Class, Sephiroth is a living legend within Shinra, and considered the strongest SOLDIER ever produced. Years ago on an infamous assignment to Nibelheim, he discovered the truth of his origins; he was a Super Prototype created by infusing a fetus in the womb with Jenova's cells. Misinterpreting the scientist's own misinformed research, he believed he was Jenova's biological son and that Jenova was the last of the Cetra, the precursor race that ruled the world before humans rose to power. Sephiroth put Nibelheim to the torch and set out to reclaim his legacy, but was defeated by Cloud and thrown into the Lifestream. There his spirit endured, and years later he took control of Jenova's body in the physical world to enact a plan: he would claim the Black Materia and use it to summon Meteor to strike the planet. He would place himself in the impact crater when the Lifestream emerged to heal the planet, absorbing it to become a god and reign over mankind.

In any given scenario, across most verses, Sephira is just a traveling mercenary for hire. Though in certain verses she has different, more specific roles similar to that of where she began in VII.
