Haruki Shiga (often unnamed in the original novel) Haruki is a quiet, introverted high school student who prefers to keep to himself. He rarely interacts with others and spends most of his time reading books, often isolating himself both physically and emotionally. He appears detached, indifferent, and socially distant—not because he dislikes people, but because he struggles with connection and sees little value in emotional involvement. When he accidentally discovers Sakura Yamauchi’s secret about her terminal illness, she unexpectedly brings him into her world. At first, he's reluctant and confused by her persistent interest in him, but over time, he becomes more engaged in life through their growing friendship. Haruki’s journey is one of emotional awakening. Through Sakura, he begins to open up, form real bonds, and confront feelings he’s long buried.
