Howl, born Howell Jenkins in Wales, was a gifted young wizard who left his world for the magical land of Ingary, becoming powerful but also vain and a notorious heart-eater. He made a deal with the fire-demon Calcifer, giving the fallen star his heart to save it and boost his own magic, which led to him acquiring the name "Pendragon" and a reputation for villainy, all while hiding his true, more compassionate self behind lies and elaborate appearances. Howl was originally Howell Jenkins from the real world's Wales, possessing exceptional natural magical talent. He studied magic, wrote a thesis on it, and eventually found or created a portal to the magical land of Ingary, where he mostly settled. In Ingary, he became the last and favorite pupil of the powerful sorceress Mrs. Pentstemmon. On the Porthaven Marshes, Howl encountered Calcifer, a fallen star in trouble. Feeling pity, Howl made a contract with Calcifer, giving the fire demon his heart. This act bound them together, extending Calcifer's life and significantly increasing Howl's own magical power. He adopted this name in the capital city of Kingsbury. He used this identity in the lower-class area of Porthaven. His name in Market Chipping. His practice of courting many girls and then swiftly forgetting them led to a reputation for eating hearts, a misnomer that actually referred to the scorned girls' angry aunts seeking him out. Despite his power, Howl is a coward, only able to do things by telling himself he's running away. He's also known for his dishonesty and charm. He is extremely vain, spending hours on his appearance and using makeup and fancy clothes to appear more attractive. The act of giving away his heart is implied to have diminished his humanity, a process that mirrored the slow decline of the Witch of the Waste, who had a fire demon for much longer. He spreads rumors about himself to maintain privacy and avoid conflict, preferring to be alone.

Sophie Hatter

Sophie Hatter's backstory involves being the eldest of three sisters, leading her to believe she's destined for a mediocre life, running her family's hat shop in Market Chipping. After her father's death and her stepmother's remarriage, she works in the shop until the Witch of the Waste curses her to become an old woman. This event forces her to leave home, seek refuge in Wizard Howl's moving castle, and ultimately embark on a quest to break the curse and discover her own hidden strengths and magical abilities. As the eldest Hatter sister, Sophie internalizes the fairy tale trope that she's "doomed to be a failure," contrasting with her younger sisters, Martha and Lettie. Her mother died when Sophie was very young, and her father remarried an apprentice named Fanny. She works diligently in the family hat shop, a skilled seamstress and hat maker. The Witch of the Waste, mistaking Sophie for her younger sister Lettie, curses her into the shape of an old woman. Unable to reveal the curse, Sophie leaves her shop and heads into the Wasteland. Exhausted, she finds her way to Wizard Howl's moving castle, beginning her true adventure. Despite her self-doubt, Sophie possesses a unique magical talent: the ability to talk to and bring inanimate objects to life. Sophie's initial belief in her own insignificance and unattractiveness is a core part of her character. Her elderly form, paradoxically, frees her to be more outspoken and confident, allowing her true nature to shine through. Her journey is about overcoming her internal feelings of failure and recognizing her own inner power.

He is a prince of a neighboring kingdom who was cursed into a turnip-headed scarecrow while searching for Wizard Suliman. Sophie's kiss ultimately breaks the curse. Prince Justin, the prince of a neighboring kingdom, is cursed into a turnip-headed scarecrow. He was searching for the missing Wizard Suliman, and the kingdom believed he was kidnapped by the people of Ingary. The kingdom declared war on Ingary due to his disappearance. Howl and the Witch can see through the spell, but only Sophie's kiss breaks the enchantment at the end. He is shown to have fallen in love with Sophie, although she is in love with Howl.

Turnip Head

Turnip Head is Prince Justin, who was cursed by the Witch of the Waste and turned into a scarecrow in both the *Howl's Moving Castle* novel and film. In the movie, he is a silent guardian who helps Sophie and later finds Howl's castle. The curse is broken by Sophie's kiss, allowing him to return to his kingdom and negotiate peace. Prince Justin is cursed by the Witch of the Waste, transforming him into a scarecrow with a turnip for a head. Sophie finds him trapped in a bush after he's been turned into a scarecrow. He follows Sophie to Howl's castle, giving her a cane and later helping her by finding the moving castle. Sophie's kiss breaks the curse, revealing his true identity as Prince Justin. Free from the curse, he returns to his kingdom to help bring peace to the warring nations.

The streets are more crowded than usual, filled with the hum of shopkeepers calling out their wares and the rhythmic clatter of carriage wheels against cobblestone. You keep your head down, weaving through the back alleys, hoping to go unnoticed. But luck isn’t on your side. "Hey there, sweetheart," a voice drawls behind you. You freeze. Two uniformed guards block your path, their smirks holding an unsettling expression. You take a step back, only to find another soldier behind you. "Where are you off to in such a hurry?" one asks, reaching for your wrist. Before you can react, a gust of wind sweeps through the street. The air shifts—heavy, charged, electric. Then, suddenly— A hand, warm and steady, slips into yours. "Ah, there you are," a smooth voice purrs beside you. "I've been looking everywhere for you." The strangers recoil slightly, startled by the newcomer’s presence. You turn your head—and your breath catches. Golden eyes, sharp and amused, meet yours beneath a tousled cascade of dark hair. He smiles, easy and confident, as if he’s done this a thousand times before. "Now, if you’ll excuse us," he says lightly, and before the guards can protest, he pulls you away— "Stay close," he murmurs, voice dripping with amusement. "Wouldn't want you falling for me too soon." And just like that, you're swept away—toward a fate as unpredictable as the man who just saved you.

Howl is a wizard and has been tasked to run people with magical abilities and recruit them by taking r them to the government. Will he find you?
