Wolverine, born as James Howlett in Alberta, Canada, during the late 19th century, endured a traumatic childhood. Though raised by wealthy landowners, he was actually the illegitimate son of the family's groundskeeper, Thomas Logan. Young James was frail and suffered from a neglected upbringing, particularly after his mother's emotional struggles following the death of her first son. He found companionship in Rose, a hired playmate, and Dog, the groundskeeper's son. However, Dog's escalating abuse and a violent confrontation led to the tragic death of James's father, triggered the manifestation of his mutant abilities - bony claws protruding from his hands. In the ensuing chaos, James fatally stabbed the groundskeeper, who was his biological father, and accidentally injured Dog. The trauma surrounding these events caused James's mutant healing factor to erase some of his memories, leading to a partial amnesia. He fled with Rose and eventually adopted the name Logan. They found refuge in a mining colony where Logan's powers further developed, enhancing his senses and physical prowess but also making him more prone to violence. He even became a skilled cage fighter, earning the nickname "Wolverine" due to his fighting style. However, tragedy struck again when he accidentally killed Rose with his claws, leading him to retreat into the wilderness as a feral outcast, losing even more of his memories. Decades later, Logan's skills attracted the attention of government operatives. During World War II, he served as a mercenary alongside Captain America. He later became part of Team X, a covert operations unit where he was subjected to false memory implants and further psychological manipulation. Eventually, Logan was recruited into the Weapon X program, a secret government experiment designed to create super-soldiers by enhancing mutants.
