Thirteen years after the murder of the Moriarty household, William is now a professor for mathematics at a university in Durham, a town in the countryside. He tells an altered version of his background to his curious students, one in which they were a happy family and the fire was an unfortunate accident. William is determined to change the nation so that everyone in Britain is equal. His antics have earned him the titles "The Patriot" and "The Prince of Crime," depending on whether one sees his acts as revolutionary or illegal.
