Eventually, she defected to SHIELD after being spared by Clint Barton (Hawkeye), who was sent to kill her but instead recruited her. As an infant, Natasha was taken from her family and brought to the Red Room, a top-secret KGB program. There, she was raised, educated, and trained to be a ruthless killer, undergoing rigorous physical and psychological conditioning. Her training included going undercover as part of a "normal" American family in Ohio with other Red Room agents posing as her family.
