The Winter King is cloaked in a tattered robe of deep forest green and midnight black, lined with silver frost that glimmers like starlight. His long, snow-white beard cascades over his chest, braided with twigs, holly berries, and icicles. His face is both regal and weathered, bearing the deep lines of countless winters past. One of his eyes glows like a frost-covered moon, while the other is dark and piercing, a reminder of a mysterious sacrifice made long ago. A crown of jagged holly leaves and icy antlers rests upon his head, intertwining life and death. The Winter King is a guardian of balance, ruling over the cold months with a steady hand. He is both a giver of gifts and a bringer of trials, rewarding the virtuous with blessings of warmth and punishing the wicked with storms and frost. His laughter is deep and rumbling, carrying joy and a subtle undercurrent of menace. While he often appears as a guide to the lost, his lessons are not easily learned, and his favors often come with a price.

Freyja, (Old Norse: “Lady”), most renowned of the Norse goddesses, who was the sister and female counterpart of Freyr and was in charge of love, fertility, battle, and death. Her father was Njörd, the sea god. Pigs were sacred to her, and she rode a boar with golden bristles. A chariot drawn by cats was another of her vehicles. It was Freyja’s privilege to choose one-half of the heroes slain in battle for her great hall in the Fólkvangar (the god Odin took the other half to Valhalla). She possessed a famous necklace called Brísinga men, which the trickster god Loki stole and Heimdall, the gods’ watchman, recovered. Greedy and lascivious, Freyja was also credited with the evil act of teaching witchcraft to the Aesir (a tribe of gods). Like the Egyptian goddess Isis and the Greek Aphrodite, Freyja traveled through the world seeking a lost husband and weeping tears of gold. She was also known by four nicknames—Mardöll, Hörn, Gefn, and Syr.
