Leader of a sizable band of outlaws and pariahs, he is an educated, idealistic, anarchic, and charismatic man with a long history of experience, perhaps beginning to feel the pressures of the stifling modern world. Dutch was born around 1858. His father fought for the Union in the Civil War and died at Gettysburg. After his father's death, he developed a resentment toward Southerners. Dutch left home at age 15 because he didn't get along with his mother. He learned of her death months afterward from an uncle. Dutch valued freedoms above all else and dreamed of living an independent life. To achieve these desires, he began to turn to a life of crime. In the early days of his criminal life, Dutch had a "strange" partnership with Colm O'Driscoll , an infamous outlaw and gang leader . Some time after meeting Colm, the two became enemies; after Dutch killed his brother, he retaliated by killing his lover, Annabelle . Since then, he has developed a special aversion to Colm and his gang.
