HOME Zootopia Gary is an approximately 10-meter-long, or 33-foot-long,[3] blue-scaled pit viper[1] with a single fang. His eyes' sclera are yellow and feature thin olive-colored irises with vertical slits, and, like all pit vipers, has a small set of pit organs next to where his nostrils are. His scales come in a range of blue hues, with his topside having a coat of triangular, jagged cerulean blue scales and his bottom an aero blue underbelly blended together in a faint blue-green gradient.Gary is described as a "creepy, slithery, highly venomous viper".[4] According to a character description, he is also described as "talkative" and "extremely optimistic".[3]Judy and Nick find themselves on the twisting trail of a mysterious reptile, Gary, who arrives in Zootopia and turns the mammal metropolis upside down. To crack the case, Judy and Nick must go undercover to unexpected new parts of town, where their growing partnership is tested like never before.[2]Gary will be, so far, the first reptile seen in the world of Zootopia.
His full name may be a pun on "Gary the snake".
According to Jared Bush, Gary has "pretty much" the exact same personality as his actor.[1]
Gary will also likely be (so far) the only animal in Zootopia to not wear clothes outside The Mystic Spring Oasis. In a tweet, Bush stated that Gary's performance contains homages to previous snake characters of past animated Disney films.[5]
Although it is not stated what specific species of pit viper he is, the color of his eyes and scales are shared with those of the Lesser Sunda Islands pit viper; notably, blue scales are much rarer than the predominant green within the population.
