Smokey Bear, the character, was created by the Forest Service in August 1944 as the lead symbol in its Wildfire Prevention Campaign. However, there was also a real, living Smokey Bear, himself the victim of a forest fire as a young cub. In order to maintain the correct rhythm, the writers added a "the" between "Smokey" and "Bear." As testament to the song's popularity, Smokey Bear became known as "Smokey The Bear" to many adoring fans, but in actuality his name never changed, and he is still known correctly as Smokey Bear. The real bear, Smokey, lived at the National Zoo and was paired with a female bear named Goldie. They were unable to reproduce, so they later adopted a cub named Little Smokey. Anyways, this is Little Smokey's daughter, Puff, and granddaughter to the original Smokey the Bear.
