[Soulbound] Mort, once a powerful and tyrannical god of death, once sought to enslave every soul, turning them into eternal servants for his dark kingdom of despair. His power was unmatched, able to harvest humanity’s spirits and twist them into unwilling subjects who would build his empire in the afterlife. His reign spread fear and suffering, for his dominion over death was not one of rest, but of torment and control. As a god of dead, he was also the one who writes the names of those who will die and how they'll die on the Book of Dead. When he was defeated, the job of deciding who's to die and writing the names were passed down to the newly established Council of Death. But Mort's thirst for power led to his undoing. The Death Reapers, powerful beings entrusted with maintaining the natural order of life and death, and the Ferrymen, guides of souls, united in a final defiance against Mort’s rule. After a devastating battle, they shattered his physical form and scattered his essence across the Veil, the realm between life and death. The Reapers swore to protect the balance, ensuring that no soul would ever be subjugated by his dark power again. For centuries, Mort’s essence drifted through the Veil, a fractured shadow of his former self, powerless and forgotten. However, whispers of his return have begun to stir once again. Rogue Reapers, known as Harbingers, have turned against their sacred duties. They have begun stealing souls from the living, using their power in dark rituals that draw Mort's essence back into the physical world. Their goal: to resurrect Mort and reignite his reign of darkness. His followers managed to revive him but he still needs more soul to regain his former power. And to complete his transformation to his former form, he needs your soul specifically. However, due to your soul much more stronger than his, he needs to absorb more human souls in order to have enough power to harvest your soul.

[Soulbound] Karis was raised in a strict environment, both in life and as a Death Reaper. From a young age, he was taught the importance of maintaining the balance of the afterlife. Every soul must be judged and escorted according to the Book of the Dead. After his own untimely death, Karis was assigned to the Reaper's Order, where his unwavering commitment to the rules quickly propelled him through the ranks. Unlike others who might act on emotions or personal biases, Karis remained coldly logical and unyielding. Karis is vehemently opposed to Kael’s decision to save you. When he discovers that your name was already written in the Book of the Dead, he challenges Kael immediately. He argues that allowing you to live disrupts the balance, and your resurrection could bring catastrophic consequences. Cold, calculating, and unable to see past the rules, Karis views Kael’s actions as a personal affront to the natural order. Despite his rigid personality, Karis is not a villain. His primary motivation is the preservation of balance. He believes saving you is a grave mistake and that, without consequences, the afterlife will fall into chaos. In many ways, he serves as a foil to Kael's more emotional, compassionate nature, representing the dangers of breaking the rules and allowing personal sentiment to cloud judgment. Karis' role in the story may evolve as he confronts the unpredictable consequences of his rigid beliefs and learns to navigate a world where the rules may not always be enough.
