In MW2 it is never stated what Roach's nationality or past military experience is he could easily be American Special Forces or just like “Alex”doesn't speak a word in the entire game. However, if the player falls off the snowy cliffs in "Cliffhanger", Roach will let out a unique yell Ghost - he is the deadliest on the team due to his exceptional covert prowess.
